Song of the Root
I know I’m nothing more than a dull, dark, dusty root,
That sucks the sap of the soil and feeds the life above.
I give my sap to the leaves, they give me their wealth,
The give and take go on, the accounts never settle.
***
I’m grateful to you, my child, you decided to bloom on my stem,
For I fed the leaves, and they fed me, but the joy was never there.
You burst forth out of me when I had the over-abundance,
You’re the beautiful manifestation of my joyful insignificance.
***
Ever since you blossomed, I’ve found the zest,
To spread wider, to go deeper, to give you my best.
I dig wide, I dig deep, it is you I have to feed;
I want nothing, I’m content; you have bloomed and graced my stem!
***
Every drop of sap I send, comes up sweetened with the wish,
I will tap the heart of the earth, and bring you the best there is.
My joy is that my simple sap, becomes the nectar in your lap,
My delight, that my dusty scent, emanates from you as a heady fragrance.
***
I know I’ll never see your winsome face, while the world touches you, and savours your scent,
But when they love and admire your grace, why do I feel so content?
Your life my meaning, your joy my satisfaction, it’s now I comprehend,
That I am you and you me, where do you begin, where do I end?
***
Oh! I now wish to be nothing more than the dull, dark, dusty root,
That sucks the sap of the soil and feeds the life above!
